FOOD SECURITY & LIVELIHOOD

Overview

In regards to the Food Security & Livelihoods, READO support provision of agricultural inputs seeds package to vulnerable farmers as per the needs. Distribution of agricultural inputs and provision of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) trainings which is usually done in season calendar. The seed packages distributed have been proven in previous projects by allowing the farmers to revive their production, whereas in the longer-term improving household food consumption score and boost small-scale production and sale.

Furthermore, READO also improves access to food for vulnerable IDP and host community in South Somalia. This is usually done through unconditional and conditional cash transfers.

READO is also currently part for the Food Security Cluster Strategic Advisory Group (SAG) providing technical guidance to humanitarian and development solutions in relation to the Food Security situation in Somalia.

WASH(Water, Sanitation and Health

WASH

Overview

READO provides emergency and sustainable access to safe clean water, sanitation and hygiene to affected IDPs and host communities in South Central Somalia. This is done through rehabilitation/construction of water points and latrines, water trucking, hygiene promotion and hygiene kits distribution.

READO employs the Market Based Programming (MBP) approach to strengthen local markets and involves cash for work for solid waste management including garbage collection and clean up campaigns.

The following are the WASH activities that were implemented in 26 IDP camps in Baidoa, Bay region.

• Construction of 150 new VIP Latrines
• Construction of 50 disabled latrines
• Provision of emergency 3000 hygiene kits
• Rehabilitation of (5) shallow wells
• Construction of new elevated water tank
• Training of Community Hygiene Promotion
• Formation and training of water management committees
• Rehabilitation of one strategic (1) borehole
• Cash for work for 500 beneficiaries for 3-month cycle @40 UDS per month

Health and nutrition

WASH

Overview

With support from different partners, READO provides free access to basic primary health care services and nutrition programs to the vulnerable pregnant, lactating and children, through provision of essential life-saving nutrition and health services and timely response children under the age of five, pregnant and lactating women, boys and men. This include treatment of children <5 years suffering from Severe Acute Malnourished Malnutrition (SAM) and Moderately Acute Malnutrition (MAM) through screening and admission to OTP sites and Stabilizing Centers as well as pregnant and lactating women) who benefit from de-worming, vitamin A supplementation and micro-nutrient support. READO has also provided daily life saving essential medical services including daily treatment of patients and proper case management of AWD/cholera and measles affected patients as well as referral of complicated cases to the nearest hospital. Also, READO provide daily measles immunization services targeting children under 5 years for prevention of measles.

Moreover, READO has successfully been able to ensure improved Basic Emergency and Obstetric New-Born Care (BemONC) and Integrated Sexual Reproductive Health and Maternal Nutrition Services to Pregnant and Lactating Women (PLWs) in Hudur and Dinsor districts in Bakool Southwest region of Somalia

Education and Child protection

WASH

Overview

READO is supporting both formal and informal schools but focusing on Basic Education package (BEP) and Education in an emergency (EIE). This involves but not limited to supplementary school feeding, rehabilitation of public learning spaces, water trucking to schools, construction of gender sensitive latrines and handwashing facilities in schools, providing monthly teacher incentives, training of teachers and Community Education Committees (CECs), distribution of teacher learning materials (TLMs) and distribution of sanitary kits to adolescent girls of school going age. In regards to Child Protection, READO has trained teachers in child protection on case management which includes referrals of cases, tracing and unification. READO also provided psycho-social support and recreational activities for learners through child to child club activities by providing all types of sports materials and facilitated the recreational events for both boys and girls. These activities include football matches for boys, skipping ropes for girls, volley ball, athletics, debates, word puzzle games and many others.

READO also engages in adult education, youth education programme, formal and non-formal education package-program, and youth employment program. This is done through vocational skills training including tailoring, carpentry, masonry etc. and through the business skills and entrepreneurship training.
